Harry Potter and MBTI, Part 6: The Combinations of Gryffindor (I)

Q-team_gryf...

Welcome everyone to the sixth part of our series, where we seek to determine whether we can gain some insight about the Harry Potter housing based on their MBTI typology, and see whether we can link them in any way. Today we will be looking at all possible combinations between the Hogwarts House of Gryffindor with Ilvermorny Houses, to see what those combinations tell us.

As a brief reminder, this is what the standalone houses’ types look like:

Before we take a look at how Gryffindor mixes with these houses, there is some groundwork to be lain. I separated all individual combinations, and calculated both the percentage of a given house to be linked to another one, and then averaged that between houses. The point of this is to determine what house combinations are more likely to occur while eliminating as much sample bias as is possible.

In our survey, for example, Thunderbird was the most represented house, so it tends to dominate throughout Hogwarts houses as the most common pair. However, it’s a much larger percentile of Ravenclaws (almost 50%) than it is of Slytherins (around 28%), so I wanted that to be reflected somehow. Which is why we average those values, and compare the individual results to it.

The average values for a given Hogwarts house to be linked to a particular Ilvermorny house are as follows:

  • Thunderbird: 36.21%
  • Pukwudgie: 26.81%
  • Horned Serpent: 23.83%
  • Wampus: 13.15%

Without further ado, let’s have a look at our crimson gold friends and their pairings. The following is a breakdown of how Gryffindors are sorted into Ilvermorny houses.

We can immediately see that Gryffindors have a larger chance than average to be sorted into Thunderbird and Pukwudgie, and oddly enough, a lesser chance to be sorted into Horned Serpent and Wampus. Let’s examine the individual combinations to see where this difference may come from. We will be comparing them to their standalone Hogwarts house, their standalone Ilvermorny house, and the average reader.

Gryffindor-Thunderbird
(Gryffinbird)

Gryffinbird is the first combination we’re going to be looking at, and it’s no wonder that the courageous Gryffindors are more likely than average to be sorted into the adventurous house of Thunderbird, accounting for 38.46% of our Gryffindors. I highly encourage going back and reading the individual house descriptions, so as to not repeat myself describing them here, so I will go off the basis that the previous articles have been read.

Coming from two houses where Extroverted Focus is predominant, even if only slightly for Thunderbirds, it comes as no surprise that Gryffinbirds would follow that same pattern. Indeed, out of all possible house combinations, Gryffinbirds are the ones where Extroversion is the most predominant, at a staggering 30%. This means that no people are as outgoing as Gryffinbirds, people who are very open about their ideas, who think out loud, and who are natural takers of the limelight.

However, the houses differ wildly regarding their Information Intake – while Gryffindors are predominantly Sensing, Thunderbird’s primary function is Intuition, and the both come to a clash here. In this particular case, neither sets through – Gryffinbirds are astoundingly neutral in this regard, with a sliver of a tendency towards Intuition, where the Thunderbird side sets through. They occupy a healthy middle ground between the practical, grounded Gryffindors, and the wandering, theoretical Thunderbirds.

The last two aspects are a landslide exacerbation of two aspects that both houses share. Both are predominantly Feeling and Perceptive, and the pairing only exaggerates these aspects. This hints at the possibility that house combinations which share a particular aspect tend to be even more markedly in favour of that aspect when combined, instead of allowing the possibility for deviation to arise. Gryffinbirds are undoubtedly firm in the Decisionmaking through Feeling camp, and also strong in their tendency towards Outer Perception. This in turn means that Gryffinbirds are very personal in their decisionmaking, having a strong core of values, and act spontaneously, leaving their options open.

Here is a chart comparing Gryffinbird values to the individual houses, with the 0 line being our average reader.

Gryfbirdchart
Key
Values to the right correspond to predominant Extraversion, Intuition, Thinking, Judging
Values to the left correspond to predominant Introversion, Sensing, Feeling, Perception
The further a value from the middle line, the more predominant it is.

We clearly see here that Gryffinbirds tend more strongly towards Extraversion than either house, and the same can be said for Feeling and Perception. However, both Intuition and Sensing balance each other out in this case, resulting in Gryffinbirds being neutral towards this aspect in general.

All in all, Gryffinbirds can be said to be as follows:

“Gryffinbird has a very strong tendency towards Extroverted Focus, a neutral tendency towards Information Intake, a very strong tendency towards Decisionmaking through Feeling and a moderate tendency towards Outer Perception”

Which means that Gryffinbirds will tend to be ENFP/ESFP

Gryffindor-Pukwudgie
(Gryffinwudgie)

That name was a difficult one to come up with (Pukkindor?), which suits a complex character such as the Gryffinwudgies themselves. In a stunning turn of events, both houses tend towards Extroverted Focus, but the combination of houses shifts it towards a neutral Focus, tending ever so slightly towards Introversion.

This is fascinating to me. It seems that removing the influences of other house combinations, both for Gryffindor and Pukwudgie, enables the Gryffinwudgie to bring forth a much stronger Introverted Focus. Without a doubt, we’re dealing with the most introverted Gryffindors, a more private shade of them. People who still have the bold, daring attitude of the lion’s house, but with a very rich inner world, who tend to step to the side to leave the limelight on others – namely, those they will be healing.

The nature of Gryffinwudgies surprises us once again with their Information Intake. Both houses, in this case, tend towards Sensing, with their practical, grounded approach. However, Gryffinwudgies have the slightest of deviations in this case – still firmly Sensing, mind you, but not as strong as their standalone houses. It would appear that Gryffinwudgies are more balanced in their values for those aspects of personality, even if the standalone houses do share them.

However, Gryffinwudgies come in force in their Decisionmaking aspect – at a staggering 75.76%, over 20% more than the average reader, it remains abundantly clear that Gryffinwudgies are people who make their decisions based on personal values, moreso than any other Gryffindor combination. Their practical nature, established above, and the courage inherited from Gryffindor, drive this house to an approach where they will not hesitate to defend their decision to act as their heart dictates.

The final piece of the puzzle comes regarding their Outer Actions, where both Pukwudgie and Gryffindor sit at opposite extremes. While Pukwudgie’s conclusive Judging aspect makes them orderly people who prefer things to be laid out, and Gryffindor’s strong Perception aspect leads them into a more flexible attitude towards rules, the combination ends up favouring Pukwudgie’s Judging, albeit not so strongly. They are still very observant of rules, moreso than any other Gryffindor, but they remain a member of the crimson house, meaning that even this strong respect might give way for their roaring nature to arise.

Here is a chart comparing Gryffinwudgie values to the individual houses, with the 0 line being our average reader.

We could summarize Gryffinwudgies as follows:

“Gryffinwudgie has a neutral tendency towards Focus, a slight tendency towards Information Intake through Sensing, a very strong tendency towards Decisionmaking through Feeling and a slight tendency towards Outer Judgment”

Our quintessential Gryffinwudgie is therefore an ISFJ/ESFJ

I honestly intended to do all of Gryffindor today, but the article is already quite long as-is (over 1300 words), so they will be finished in our next installment. Be sure to tune in on Monday for Hornedgryffin and Wampusdor (or whatever name you people suggest). Cheers!
